3rd Annual Water Safety Awareness Day

By Yiwei Dong, www.SwimStrongFoundation.org May 18, 2015

Swim Strong Foundation successfully held it’s 3rd Annual Water Safety Awareness day on May 16th at Bushwick High School, Brooklyn and Far Rockaway High School, Queens.

The drowning statistics are frightening.  On average every day 10 people die due to drowning here in the United Sates.  It is the 2nd largest cause of death for children ages 14 and younger with kids of color drowning 3 times more than their Caucasian peers.  It is the leading cause of death for children 5 and younger with most of those tragedies happening in their very own homes.  It only takes 2 inches of water and 2 minutes to drown.

As the summer approaches, water safety should become a very important topic in families of all communities. The purpose of our event is to not only give free swim lessons; but also to offer information as to how to keep your family safe in and around water as well as CPR training, ear protection, and health and nutrition discussions….all meant to inform families so they can have a safer, healthier summer.

95% of drowning deaths do NOT have to occur.  Understanding and respecting the water; using good judgement and common sense combined with strong swimming skills will reduced these senseless deaths.  Swim Strong uses this opportunity to raise awareness; provide education and give free-swimming lessons to communities so that more people can be safe around the water.

Swim Strong provides classes in 6 locations at Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan.  We have taught more than 5000 people how to swim.  1750 were children who qualified for frees swim lessons under our scholarship program.
